The Forestière jacket – the iconic jacket reinvents itself

The Forestière’sname was inspired by gamekeepers, or guardians of the woods, who in the early 20th century needed a work jacket they could wear out in the forest granting them comfort and freedom of movement. Its original use gave rise to a very welcome design feature: generous armholes, making the piece both elegant and functional. Popular among creatives and thinkers in the cultural, media and fashion spheres, the Forestière is a true all-rounder – smarter than a bomber jacket, but less formal than a suit jacket.

It was designed over half a century ago by Léon Grimbert, founder of the Paris menswear institution Arnys, located at 14 Rue de Sèvres – a leading authority on Left Bank chic. In the late 1980s Léon’s son Jean brought the Forestière back into fashion, initially introducing a thick-ribbed corduroy. This was followed by other equally striking combinations down the years.

When Berluti extended its remarkable allure to a full range of menswear in 2011, Alessandro Sartori revisited the legendary Forestière to incorporate a fresh iteration into the Maison’s first ready-to-wear collection.

This new design had all the hallmarks of a future classic. It came in gorgeous, superbly tactile materials – pure cashmere, 100% wool flannel – whose beauty was matched only by the flawlessness of their tailoring.

The Forestière continues to reinvent itself ever since. Retaining the signature standing collar, soft shoulders and generous pockets, it’s crafted in the finest materials like leather, gabardine of wool or cashmere. A subtle palette of exclusive mid-tones plays up the lightness and easy comfort of the jacket, with each lush shade bringing a new dimension to its remarkable elegance.

Practical, chic and understated, the Forestière ages like a fine wine, becoming an essential in the Men’s wardrobe.

It looks just as good worn with bespoke boots or the iconic Andy loafer as it does with new-generation sneakers, such as any of the various styles of Shadow. This hybrid garment comes in a long or short cut, adapting to your personal style and keeping you looking sharp all day long.

The new Forestières are now available online and in Berluti boutiques. The piece comes in cashmere, wool gabardine or gently weathered suede, or revisited in a ‘cardigan’ or a coat style.
